Getting in the Orange zone!
This morning was my first (and hopefully not last) Orangetheory Fitness class. Thanks to Scoop Charlotte, I'm able to try TWO free classes at the OTF studio (which is conveniently located less than 1 mile from our home).
Ryan has been taking classes there since December ... 8 classes a month. He mixes in outdoor running and some weight lifting at the YMCA and I've got to admit the man is looking pretty fit. Not to mention he comes back from the 5am classes ... yes that's right FIVE FREAKIN A.M. in such a great mood. I knew I had to try the class for myself to see what all of the hype was about.
I made my little family breakfast and headed over to the studio about 20 minutes before class time. I was briefed on the work out and given a heart rate monitor to use. It was my first time using a monitor so I wasn't really sure what to expect. It fit around my ribcage right under my sports bra band.
I'm not sure how often work outs change, but they're usually some variation of running on a treadmill, rowing on a machine, and weight/ab exercises in the weight room.
I started off with running on the treadmill and started cautiously at a low speed (5.5). We increased our speed during different "blocks" of time and after about 17:30 minutes I had jogged a little over 1.5 miles. Then the fun started and we alternated running (sprinting?) 0.25 miles with 150 meters of rowing. I completed 3 of those cycles.
Once we were done with that we headed to the weight room for various exercises. I'm not going to list exactly what we did exercise wise since its their program and you should try a class for yourself to see what they do include :)
but I did work out my abs, did some core work, squats and lunges, some triceps and shoulders for a bit. lots of muscles that I don't usually work out but should definitely put into the rotation. I had to modify some of the core work but other than that kept up with the routine. core work 6 weeks after labor/delivery, after 40 weeks of no core work = HELL
my average heart rate was 127 and I burned an estimated 730 calories
I walked out of the class dripping in sweat ... I was annoyed I had to wash my hair but other than that loved the experience.
I'm not a big fan of any type of work out that lasts over 50 minutes so I was kind of getting bored by the end. I also didn't like that you had to keep track of the distance ran on the treadmill yourself ... every time you switched from the treadmill to the rowing machine your treadmill started over with new stats. Since I keep track of my running miles I kept a sheet of paper nearby with a pen to jot down my mileage. Definitely not the end of the world.
I came home and told Ryan all about the class and how sore I was already ... and how much respect I had for him taking that class so many times. I liked that the instructor was there to push you to work harder after initially explaining what the exercise should be.
I need to sign up for my next free class before 7 days are up and I can't wait for my next OTF experience!
install some childcare in the studio and you would have me signed up for a membership in no time!
