January running in review

For the month of January I had set a goal of 50 miles jogging for myself.  I knew I wanted to take it easy and figured I would get tired of treadmill and indoor track running pretty quickly.

Lucky for me I was able to run outdoors a few times and didn't tire too easily of being stuck indoors.  We still have a lot of winter left so there is plenty of time for me to miss running outdoors.

I would love to hit 50 miles in February but with 3 less days (and an even bigger pregnant belly) I doubt it'll happen.

Bagels! Bagels! Bagels!

I should really change the name of my blog to will run for bagels. I've had 3 bagels from 3 different places in the past 6 days.

Sunday after flywheel (spinning class) I had a garlic bagel with olive cream cheese from Poppy's, a local bagel joint. I love their bagels! They are so delicious and they never skimp on the cream cheese application.

Yesterday I had an everything bagel with garlic cream cheese from Einstein's. Their bagels aren't bad but are the mostly costly of the three places.

Today after another flywheel class (and jogging 3 miles at the ymca beforehand) I stopped by Bruegger's for my bagel. I should've gone to Poppy's but had to drop off dry cleaning, and it's located right next door to Bruegger's. I ordered a garlic bagel with olive cream cheese and wasn't impressed. They totally jip you on the cream cheese and the bagel didn't taste as fresh as it usually does.

Must. Eat. Veggies.

Sigh. What a day of eating poorly. Usually I don't give in to all of my pregnancy cravings but today was rough. Mason has been on/off again sick for what seems like months and Ryan is finishing his 4th week straight of travel. I'm mentally and physically exhausted.

For breakfast I started innocently enough and had a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries. Then while running errands with Mason I succumbed to craving #1 and picked up an everything bagel with garlic cream cheese from Einsteins.

Clearly that filled me up because for lunch I baked myself a side of french fries. No main course ... Just fries (craving #2).

And after laying on the couch for a few minutes I had the genius idea to make donuts to satisfy craving #3.



Oh and since Mason has been sick we haven't been going to the gym. So that means I've been eating really poorly AND not exercising.

Fingers crossed I get my act together in the next 5 weeks before baby brother's arrival, otherwise I'm going gain a ton of (unnecessary) weight.

Pregnancy #2 - week 34

I really hope I can make it another 6 weeks ... my back has been terribly sore lately.  I'm looking forward to scheduling a massage with the giftcard I received at my wonderful sprinkle.  Steph did such a great job of planning everything ... every detail was perfect and definitely not overlooked.  My group of friends did a great job of keeping the baby brunch relaxed and informal and I think every one had a great time!

In the past week I've slept even less at night and seem to be peeing every 30 minutes.  I am not a fan.  I love how I managed to block most of unhappy pregnancy memories from Mason from my mind.  The last 40 days are definitely not a picnic but the end result is magical.  It makes me want to meet baby brother that much more!

I'm still running and managed to go to a spinning class on Sunday morning.  The results aren't pretty; I'm usually wiped out after a work out.  I'm not pushing myself too hard and will stop working out once it becomes too uncomfortable but for now I'm enjoying the time to myself.

My next doctor's appointment is Monday morning so I'll have a recap on week 35's post. 

I spent some time doing baby brother's laundry and even put some away in his new dresser.  The nursery is far from being done but it's nice to check some things off the list.  Ryan even installed the carseat this past weekend which makes things seem even more real (and bizarre that I'm actually going to have TWO kids).

Spinning at almost 34 weeks

This morning I woke up and headed to a 7:30am Flywheel class. I haven't done a class in way too long and was looking forward to it.

I was excited to ride with a pregnant instructor, Jen. She's 32 weeks pregnant (I think) and still teaching classes. I was also surprised to see a mom friend from Mason's school get on the bike next to me (Lindsay is also pregnant with her second child and she's 20 something weeks).

Jen led us through a tough and challenging class and I found myself scaling back the RPMs quite a bit. After only jogging for the past couple of months my legs were definitely out of shape.

The 45 minute class was a great way to start my Sunday, and even managed to warm me up a bit (it was 30 degrees when I got there and I left a dripping sweaty mess).

It was a tough work out but I left the studio feeling energized, especially on the walk to Poppy's where I promptly ordered a garlic bagel with olive cream cheese ... It's delicious I swear!

Looking forward to another Flywheel class this week ... And another bagel.

Beet smoothie 2.0

I think my body is fed up with only getting bread products for meals. The third trimester of my pregnancy has brought some aversions to vegetables and I've found myself eating bowl after bowl of cereal.

I was surprised when we got home from Whole Foods that I wanted a smoothie full of vegetables.




Looks pretty gnarly but I swear it was good. Hence drinking the entire thing.

Into the blender went half a beet, handful of baby kale, handful of raspberries, 1/2 banana, splash of orange juice, and 1/2 cup of water.

It was a little thicker than usual but definitely hit the spot. I love how energetic I feel after eating beets. Let's go change the world!

Pregnancy #2 - week 33

Yahoo!  We have less than 50 days to go until baby brother's anticipated arrival.  Seems like both such a long time and not enough time to go.

This week I had my first sports medicine physical therapy session for my back.  I had anticipated trying acupuncture but my doctor recommended other techniques before delving into needles.  After an intense adjustment and deep massage in my lower back I felt great Friday leaving their office.  Unfortunately the pain is back and I am looking for some much needed relief.

Also this week I took a third round of maternity pictures.  I'll post some of my favorites soon!

And lastly I get to attend my baby sprinkle this Saturday at my friend Steph's house.  She graciously offered to throw me a small get together to honor baby brother and I couldn't be happier!  I can't wait to see my girlfriends during a laid back, rock inspired, baby brunch.



According to thebump.com, baby at 33 weeks is 4.2 to 5.8 pounds, and 17.2 to 18.7 inches.  Seems so close to full grown ... can't imagine how much bigger baby will get in the next 7 weeks.

  • Headaches, due to hormone fluctuations, stress or dehydration. (unfortunately yes)
  • Shortness of breath -- though you're probably used to it by now.  (especially walking up and down the stairs)
  • Forgetfulness and clumsiness, also known as baby brain. This is totally normal. (I can't imagine being any more clumsy than I already am)


Any relays out there?

This morning I ran 3 miles after dropping Mason off at school. I wanted to get it over with before running any errands.

It was drastically colder than yesterday's run ... 40 degrees. I wore one of the only long sleeve running shirts that currently fit over my bump.



It was from the Gasparilla marathon relay in Tampa, FL that Ryan and I ran with our friends Chris and Mike back in 2010. Splitting up 26.2 miles is way better than running the whole marathon yourself. I would love to do another relay like this in the future but haven't found one.

Anyone run a marathon relay before?

Shorts in January!

I am so happy that it's currently 60 degrees in Charlotte. After dropping Mason off at the Charlotte Junior Gym for his weekly class, I headed straight to the greenway to get an outdoor run in.

3 slow jogging/walking miles were finished in right over 30 minutes. Although my legs felt sluggish I felt wonderful being outside and enjoying the sunshine. I even wore shorts!



I guess the baby bump is in full effect today because I got numerous "you're carrying a basketball" comments.

50 days til baby brother is due to arrive ...

I had seen the above Brooks while upstairs and now the chick magically appears in the locker room. I'm tempted to ask her what kind they are but she's in the middle of breastfeeding and seems busy.

Pregnancy #2 - week 32

Week 32 brings an update on weight from the doctor's office.  I had my appointment on Monday morning and had the great joy of bringing Mason with me ... he wasn't feeling well so I didn't want to burden the other kids in class with his germs. 

weight - 126 pounds (up 1 pound from my last visit on 12/19)

I met with a new-to-me doctor at the practice and asked her opinion on the whole vaginal delivery/c-section debate.  She recommended that I try a vaginal delivery with a time/pain limit and switch to c-section as needed.  I'm on board with this since I wasn't really sure I wanted to commit to a c-section and think I owe myself the chance to deliver baby brother vaginally.

according to thebump.com, baby is the size of a squash, weighing in at 2.5-3.8 pounds, and measuring 15.2-16.7 inches.

Since last week, I survived my trip down to FL and had a good time with my friend Katie.  It was nice waking up on my own and without the aid of a baby monitor by my head.  Highlights of sleep include only waking up once to pee.  Yahoo!

All day sickness is back ... I've been feeling super nauseous and have been eating carbs hardcore.  Nothing really sounds appetizing which is unfortunate.  Today I went my first morning without coffee in a long time.  Just didn't feel like making it and never got around to stopping at a coffee shop.  I didn't realize the 4 ounces I drank in the morning actually made a difference until I noticed myself totally spacey all morning long (spacier than normal).

Boca - Cheeseburger Review

While in Florida this past weekend, I had the opportunity to dine at Boca Winter Park, a kitchen/bar/market with a huge emphasis on seasonal local ingredients.

After reviewing the menu prior to arrival, I knew I was going to order their house burger.

At $17 this was definitely one of the most costly burgers I've ever ordered.  I am not sure what the B-1 sauce and BE-1 sauce were, but they must've been good because I ate the entire burger.  I did order my burger without the tomato and took most of the lettuce off towards the end.  Who wants to waste time with vegetables when there is a huge meat patty to enjoy?

The burger patty itself wasn't incredibly seasoned, but it didn't need to be either.  The quality of the meat was so high that I didn't mind just tasting ground beef with every bite.  

The fries were ok.  I would've hoped the truffle fries would have stolen the show but they were a second thought.  I didn't finish them and offered them to the other diners at my table.

I wouldn't call this burger life changing, and at $17 be prepared to spend way more than necessary.  It was definitely a good burger though and even made the (pregnancy) heartburn later that night worthwhile.

I've got the beet!

Or however that song goes ... We've got the beat ...

I boiled a beet on Wednesday night and never got around to eating it. It's been on my mind ever since so I decided to throw it into a smoothie before leaving for Florida.




Along with a small beet, I added 1/2 small apple, and 4 strawberries with some orange juice to get it moving.

My initial sip caught me off guard but I quickly finished the sweet bright pink smoothie.

I really thought it would hold me over for a bit but as soon as I walked into the airport I was hungry. I grabbed a slice of cheese pizza at Sbarro while heading to my gate.

Oh well at least I jogged 3 miles this morning!

Anyone else love beets like me?

dailymile 2014 year end report

I am so happy dailymile has announced an app for the iPhone!  I love using this website for tracking my running and now the app makes it so much easier to do so.

I'm happy to report that I ran 133 more miles in 2014 than in 2013.  I think that's a pretty big increase.  I would've loved to hit 1000 miles but becoming pregnant in June made it slightly more difficult to do high mileage in the 2nd half of the year. 

The pounds burned always cracks me up ... would I really be 30 pounds heavier had I not run the entire year?  Technically I am but only because there is a baby in there :)

pregnancy #2 - week 31

Ugh ... these are especially terrible looking pictures of myself.  I have no one to blame but myself.  No make up, tired eyes, and sweatpants = least photogenic Jess.

oh well.  I'm thankful I am still posting these weekly updates. 

I haven't been sleeping well from the million potty breaks all night long.  Not to mention the fact that Mason skipped his nap yesterday and has been a bit challenging ... lack of sleep drags on for days and will somehow affect his behavior until he has caught up on sleep.  Hallelujah he's actually napping now.

This weekend we took some family maternity photos with our neighbor/photographer and I finished up the shoot with her yesterday.  I'm looking forward to seeing how they turned out since they are a bit more artsy than my previous maternity shoot back in the day for Mason.

December running in review


I'm happy to note that I finished off 2014 with a strong running month.  After only running 50 miles in October and November, it was nice to hit over 60 miles in December.

Runs in December were pretty interesting since 2 of them were done in San Juan Puerto Rico!  I also managed to run 4 miles twice as my longest distance and kept my slowest pace under 13 minutes.
 
 

First outdoor run of the year!

I haven't run outdoors since 12/25. That's a lot of indoor track and treadmill runs that I've had.

Today after dropping Mason off at preschool (hallelujah the break is over) I headed out for 3 miles. It was definitely chilly, temps around 40 degrees, but I found myself enjoying my time outside.




Holy wrinkles! I look like a hot (cold) mess in this picture but Mason loved my headband so I figured I should document this moment.

Monthly running goal is 50 miles and so far I've done 10.7. Quite a bit to go in the next 26 days!

South 21 Matthews - Cheeseburger Review


Today our little family tried out a new to us burger spot in the town of Matthews.  It was a bit of a drive ... close to 25 minutes from us but it was well worth it!

South 21 was opened in 1955 by 3 Greek brothers.  After having such a success for over 50 years another location was opened in Matthews in 2006. 

Ryan and I both ordered the Jumbo Cheeseburger ...

*Two beef patties, two slices of cheese, mustard, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, with French Fries

I altered my burger and had cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard with a side of onion rings instead of the fries.  Mason got the kids cheeseburger meal and the burger was huge!

The jumbo cheeseburger with either fries or onion rings was $6.05 plus tax, and I think Mason's meal was $4.40 plus tax.  Add 2 iced teas and our total was just over $20.  Not too bad for a huge burger meal.


Since I have such a history with flame broiled burgers (4 years of working at Burger King), I love eating burgers cooked this way.  South 21 executed a perfectly cooked, juicy burger, on a sesame seed bun.  The onion rings were crispy and delicious.  I tried some of Mason's fries and those were just ok ... I prefer thin, crispy, shoestring style French fries.

Overall I loved my South 21 burger and ate every last bite.  I would love to venture over to the original location at some point and eat at the drive up restaurant with car service, but know better than to take Mason to a place like that where you're required to eat in your car. 

I can definitely see making the drive again on a lazy Saturday to enjoy another Jumbo Cheeseburger from South 21 Matthews.  I'm glad I ran those 2.5 miles this morning :)

Running in the new year

It's day 2 of 2015 and I've already ran a combined 5 miles between yesterday and today. Yahoo!






My goals for the new year are to slow down and take it easy in regards to running. With 2 months left til baby brother's arrival I don't anticipate having loads of miles ran. And that's ok. I'll have the rest of the year to get back into shape.

My first race after having Mason was in June so hopefully I can do the same this time around.

2015 will be a rebuilding year with my running. Looking forward to getting stronger and building a good base to take on some PR's in 2016.

Oh and let's throw in a half marathon this fall into the mix. Why not?
