pregnancy #2 - week 30

I'm tired.  Sleep has been hard ... I'm uncomfortable, I have to get up to pee all the time, and my dreams are wicked crazy. 

I read back on my old pregnancy posts and saw that my back pain was the real deal back then too.  Not that it makes it any better but its good to know that I'm not complaining any more than normal ... at least that's what I'd like to say.

I tried to use a curling wand with my hair this week ... so there's that.  Maybe I just wanted to look extra nice for our family date night in honor of New Year's Eve.  Ha.  At least I showered and switched out of leggings today.  It's the little things.

according to the baby is the size of a cucumber ... 15.2- to 16.7-inch, 2.5- to 3.8-pound baby continues to grow.

  • Heartburn, which might be making sleep hard to come by. (I think I have some right now)
  • Swelling -- it's totally normal, as long as it's not sudden or severe. (haven't really noticed)
  • General discomfort, thanks to your big belly. (yep!)
  • Shortness of breath. Those lungs just keep getting more crowded, right? (um maybe?)
  • Trouble sleeping, which leads to another issue: Fatigue.  (yes and yes!)
  • Weird, vivid dreams. One word (a familiar one): Hormones. (oh yes ... crazy wacky dreams)

It's crazy to think that baby brother will be here in 2.5 months ... looking forward to my next doctor's appointment on the 12th to discuss possible delivery methods since my anxiety level over having a C-section is through the roof!

My last 3 miler of 2014

I can't believe the year is over in just a few hours. I just finished jogging my last 3 miles of 2014.

It wasn't pretty and was super slow but I finished in under 33 minutes. And yes that's a gross sweat mark on my very patriotic tshirt.

I'll have a running recap of the year up soon but I'm happy to report I hit 900 miles for 2014!

Also I'll have my 30 weeks of pregnancy post up ... Makes me smile to think I'm (slowly) running this late into the pregnancy. Here's to 10 more weeks of running! Unless baby brother wants to come a little early ... Then by all means I'll cut my running goals short.

What our day was like ...

I thought it would be fun to see what a day in the life was like for us.  It's really not that exciting ... I mean I spend my day at home with a toddler and dog.  But sometimes there are outings (like today's lunch) and friends who stop by (morning toddler play date). 

6:20 - I wake up to use the bathroom. Head back to bed.
6:45 - decide to wake up for good and start catching up on email, Facebook, and Instagram before the rest of the family is awake
7:15 - head downstairs to start the coffee maker and get breakfast going
7:30 - Mason has now joined me downstairs and is watching TV while I cook. I also decide to start a load of laundry.

7:45 - breakfast as a family. Ryan doesn't travel this week so it's been fun having him around. I have an egg, blueberries, 1/2 banana, and cinnamon raisin English muffin.  

8:00 - clean up kitchen and head upstairs to play
9:00 - friend comes over for a play date
10:15 - friend leaves and Mason demands snack downstairs.  He has yogurt and wants more food.  I convince him to wait until lunch.
10:30 - Head back upstairs to clean up playroom and put away laundry. Read books until lunch.

12:00 - special treat from dad ... Lunch at Tijuana Flats!

1:00 - put Mason down for nap. Head downstairs to empty dishwasher.
1:30 - Head back upstairs to clean master bathroom. Notice Mason is finally asleep.
2:00 - free time for mom. Too full from lunch but thinking I should sneak off to gym for a bit.
2:30 - treadmill at YMCA.  slow 2.22 miles to even off my miles for the year.
3:15 - shower and rest until Mason wakes up.
4:00 - Mason is up and demands a snack.  actually he asks nicely this time and we head downstairs for some fruit.
4:15 - we head back upstairs to play.  we color and read books (yes the same ones we read this morning).
5:00 - I head downstairs to start dinner prep.
5:15 - back upstairs to play some more until dinnertime
5:45 - finish up dinner and sit down to eat as a family.  I made sweet potatoes and a kale/quinoa mixture (kale, quinoa, craisins, walnuts, feta cheese, and capers).  Along with that I had 1/2 banana and a slice of buttered toast. I've been craving carbs like crazy and gave the boys steak to go along with their meal.

After dinner we spend time downstairs while I clean up the kitchen.  Mason likes to play in his mini kitchen with his play food.
6:45 - head upstairs to play until bath time
7:15 - bath time and start bed time routine ... brush teeth, go potty, get pajamas on, and read lots of books. 
7:45 - head downstairs after leaving Mason's room.  eat some ice cream and head back upstairs.
8:15 - Mason is finally asleep and I am in bed reading blogs online.  once this post is finished I'll brush my teeth and start to drift off to sleep (ideally).
each day is slightly different ... especially since Mason has been off from school.  most mornings we wake up between 6:45-7:15.  when Ryan isn't traveling we are lucky to have him for meals.  it also gives me the opportunity to sneak away to the gym for 45 minutes (roundtrip) while Mason is napping. 
Cleaning is done every day ... I target different rooms on different days.  for example I vacuumed the entire upstairs of our house yesterday and cleaned Mason's bathroom.  On Sunday I cleaned the downstairs half bathroom.  Too much house and not enough time to clean everything in one day. 
I shower after working out and on days that I don't get to work out I shower before bed.  I am not a morning shower person and try to get it done when time permits (a luxury and curse of being a stay at home mom).
And I think that's it for my random notes.  I'm exhausted!

Thirty three months

this will be the last Mason update until the big 3 years old! 

please please please tell me that the terrible two's do not continue to the terrible three's.  sheesh there isn't much more I can take of Mason's antics and shenanigans.  sometimes he's just. so. bad.  and other times he can be such a doll.  toddlers are definitely little versions of bipolar sufferers. 

this week the kid hates bath-time.  so much so that he's started peeing in the tub again.  I HATE PEE IN THE TUB! 

I think part of the issue has been holiday break from preschool.  I know he only attends 3 days a week but those days away from home, alongside his buddies, under someone else's watch are so important to both of our wellbeing.  We are now on week 2 of no school and I'm pretty sure we're both ready to kill each other. 

Maybe I'm a bit hormonal and dramatic with the whole pregnancy thing.  I clearly don't have as much patience as I should when dealing with a toddler.  It's not really Mason's fault ... he's 2.  He's learning every day the difference between right and wrong. 


  • favorite foods - French toast sticks for breakfast, almond milk out of a big boy cup, carrots with hummus, "dip" (guacamole), and various fruits depending on the day.  he definitely has maintained his healthy appetite and seems to be growing bigger and stronger each day
  • favorite toys - he's too quick to jump from toy to toy so it's hard to pick one favorite ... he still sleeps with both of his Georgie's (curious George), he likes his new train set, likes the idea of his baseball glove, and his kitchen full of play food
  • favorite activities - sweeping the leaves outside with a broom.  seriously.  it's a bizarre activity.  eating snacks.  watching youtube videos on Ryan's iPhone.
  • gets in trouble for - hitting the dog, hitting his parents, throwing toys down the stairs, banging on Ryan's office door while Ryan is working
  • funny phrases - "come on man", singing his ABC's, singing "strong than 1, stronger than 10, stronger than 100 men ... huh", mostly anything in song form

He's done leaps and bounds better with the potty training ... still using pullups at naptime and bedtime.  Loves to go potty by himself now, although he prefers to do everything by himself lately. 

He truly is a funny little guy and most times I love my time spent with him.  I just need to work on being more patient and forgiving of him. 

A humbling experience

Yesterday I walked into the ymca expecting to do my usual couple of miles around the indoor track. Instead I was inspired by a passerby to do yoga.

It wasn't a prenatal yoga class so I had to modify some of the positions ... Such as cobra or upward dog.

Also my balance was pretty comical. I kept leaning over from my middle heavy belly.

It was a peaceful experience, but also very humbling since I couldn't do as many positions as I was once used to. Overall I'm glad I gave my body a break from running ... Even though I did run a one mile after the class before heading home.

Today I just finished 3.25 miles around the indoor track and am curious how many more I need to finish up the 900 miles for the year.

With only two more days left (after today) of 2014 I better get going!

Jingle bell jog

Merry Christmas everyone! Santa was generous this year and gave us a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid 50's, after days of gray skies and cold rain.

I laced up during Mason's nap and hit our neighborhood for 3 miles. I finished in under 30 minutes and am that much closer to hitting my revised year goal of 900 miles. One week left to knock out the last 9 miles!

pregnancy #2 - week 29

Merry Christmas Eve!  this post is coming to you quickly ... I have some cooking to finish up and Mason and Ryan are hanging out with some neighbors momentarily.

on Friday I went to the doctor's for a check up and everything looks great with baby.  I've been getting a lot of disagreeing opinions from the doctors at the practice on how I should deliver (based on my previous 4th degree tear) and am leaning towards a C-section. 

weight - 125 pounds

Next appointment is on January 12th so I'll have an update during the 32 week post.

I'm so thankful I found another pair of my jeans that still fit ... these are slightly stretchy Paige denim, but are unfortunately cropped so I have to wear them with tall boots. 

Nothing really new ... still experiencing major lower back pain and have yet to find an acupuncturist.  Flight has been booked to visit Katie in Orlando in 2 weeks.  That will obviously be my last trip/flight until after Baby's arrival.

  • Lots of kicks! (All that crowding.)   - YES
  • Headaches and/or lightheadedness, possibly due to difficulty sleeping, but it could be from low blood sugar too, so make sure you're eating at regular intervals. - NOT TOO BAD
  • Itchy belly. Your skin is stretching thinner, making it more sensitive. - OH YEAH
  • Back, leg or pelvic pain. - SO MUCH BACK PAIN
  • Hemorrhoids. Baby's putting pressure on your digestive system, and hormones may be relaxing your intestinal muscles. Eat plenty of fiber. - NOPE
  • Constipation. This isn't really helping the hemorrhoid situation, is it? - NOPE
  • Trouble sleeping -- still! - YEP!
  • Gotta pee -- again! The more your uterus expands, the more you'll probably have to hit the restroom. - ALL THE TIME
  • Varicose veins. Don't worry! These should fade after delivery. - HAVEN'T SEEN ANY YET

50 minutes off

Let me start off by saying that I am very grateful and thankful that I get to stay at home with Mason. It's a tough job but so rewarding. It's been especially tough while pregnant, when my nerves are shot and my patience levels are low.

So after a pretty rough morning with Mason I knew I had to get out of the house and let off some steam. Ryan is working from home but has some intense conference calls to deal with so he wasn't too keen on me leaving. I promised him that Mason had fallen asleep for his nap and that I would be back in an hour from the YMCA.

I raced, I mean, safely drove to the gym, parked, power walked inside and headed straight to the indoor track.

I knocked out 3.5 miles in under 31 minutes then was ready to head home. I made it back in 50 minutes and even got to shower. Thankfully my little monkey is still napping and I get a few more quiet moments to myself.

Don't take running or exercising for granted. Those minutes of working out are such a great stress reliever and definitely help make me a better person.

2 very different 2 milers

Short and sweet. That's the name of my jogging game lately. I don't want to put any stress on the baby and quite frankly it's become more difficult to keep up a faster pace.

Yesterday I did my 2 miler outdoors at the beautiful Little Sugar Creek greenway. It also helped that my goal for finishing was a Bruegger's bagel ... Did y'all know that they have olive cream cheese and garlic bagels?

It was around 40 degrees and I was definitely dressed for it.

This morning Mason asked me where we were going today (he loves being out on the town it seems) so the gym seemed like a viable option. This was my fifth morning running in a row so I wanted to take it easy.

Another 2 miler but this time indoors around the track. Much different wardrobe choice when running at the gym. Loved my cute backless shirt and sports bra combo, but unfortunately the bump has gotten too big and the shirt isn't long enough anymore :(

Probably taking a day off tomorrow from running but hoping to meet my goal of running 900 miles in 2014. I think I have 19 miles to go!

pregnancy #2 - week 28

Whew ... almost didn't get this post done in time.  Just got home from a "crazy" date night with Ryan.  We went to the movies and saw "Hunger Games, Mockingjay - Part 1."  It wasn't bad.  I can't remember the last time we went to the movies.  I definitely inhaled my kid's pack (tiny popcorn, fruit snacks, and extra small drink).

Anyways back to the task at hand.  This week I hit 28 weeks.  On Friday I have my regular check up at the ob/gyn and will see how baby is doing for the 29 weeks post.

I'm feeling great, large, but great.  Still have major back pain and have started to get super tired by late afternoon.  I squeezed into regular jeans for today but as Ryan pointed out, the zipper isn't having it and looks like it might break with further wear (you can see what I'm talking about in one of the pictures).

Putting on layers of fat, your baby now weighs in around 1.5 to 2.5 pounds and measures about 13.6 to 14.8 inches.

  • Trouble sleeping. As you get closer to your due date, you'll likely have more and more trouble with this. It could be hormones or nerves -- or both! (YES!!!)
  • Shortness of breath, as baby continues to crowd your lungs. (not too bad)
  • Aches and pains -- the third trimester can be really uncomfortable due to hormone fluctuations and the toll on your body. (BACK PAIN BACK PAIN BACK PAIN)
  • Braxton Hicks contractions -- these might be getting stronger or more frequent as your bod gets ready for labor. (oh yeah!)
  • Leaky boobs. Your breasts may already be producing baby's first food, a yellowish substance called colostrum. (oh geez it's going to start already? so far I'm in the clear)

I'm still running, just not as far or fast as each previous week.  No real cravings or aversions, just trying to stay healthy and not pack on all of the weight.  Happy to report that baby and I are doing well!  I've been looking into acupuncture and am going to try to schedule a treatment for later this month or January depending on availability.  I've heard it'll help with the back pain and am willing to try anything!

Running while pregnant

As I enter my 3rd (and final) trimester of my second pregnancy, I figured it would be a good time to address running while pregnant.  I use the term "running" loosely since my stride has become more of a jogging/fast walking.  I "ran" almost 40 weeks while pregnant with Mason and feel this pregnancy might be the same.
Today I ran 4 miles in under 40 minutes!
Since I'm not technically training for anything, my speed and distance doesn't quite matter.  I'm just happy I'm still out there running and getting some exercise.  Not to mention running has always been my stress release and I couldn't imagine not running a few times a week.

Lately I've been running anywhere from 10-15 miles a week, with a pace of 10 min/miles up to 12 min/miles. 

According to, "Your distance, speed and intensity will depend on whether you were a beginner, intermediate or advanced exerciser before you became pregnant."

Based on the chart they provide, I am considered an advanced exerciser:  
during 1st trimester - You were running 15–20 miles a week consistently for 6 months or more prior to pregnancy and occasionally competed in races. You can continue this routine except for the racing. If you feel as if you are overexerting yourself, walk or discontinue the routine until you feel stronger.

during 2nd trimester -  You can run as many as 5 days a week if you feel comfortable. Work out in a pool on days when you are feeling tired or are not up for a run.

during 3rd trimester - You surely are feeling the extra weight you are carrying. If you still feel good and want to continue running, then do so. You may find that you don’t feel comfortable running as long or for as many days a week as you did in the first two trimesters. If you feel unstable, walk or continue your runs in a pool.

The article further provides some guidelines to keep in mind as you continue to run during your pregnancy:

Use the talk test. - try having a conversation while exercising ... as long as you can still talk then you are getting enough oxygen to baby
Stop if you experience pain, fever, bleeding, dizziness, faintness, pubic pain, persistent headache, sudden swelling, difficulty walking, lack of normal fetal movement or an abnormally rapid heartbeat.
Rest if you feel extreme fatigue. Listen to your body, and don’t overdo it.
Drink up. Add 8 ounces of water to your total daily fluid intake for every 30 minutes of exercise. Stay cool by dressing in breathable layers that you can shed. In warm weather, exercise early or late in the day, and ratchet down the intensity.
Watch your back. Back pain is common during pregnancy; if you experience it, make sure your exercise routine isn’t the culprit.
Watch the clock. Don’t work out at a high intensity for more than 40 minutes at a time.

So basically, don't overdo it.  Listen to your body.  Take it easy ... after all baby comes first!  Exercising while pregnant will help with excessive weight gain and ultimately with the baby's delivery.  I'm all for it!

Pregnancy #2 - week 27

Here we are ... week 27 and I'm trying to get this post up on time (Wednesday) and not super late.

I still have to take my pictures but as I'm sitting at a meeting I figured I should get started on some of the mindless babble I usually fill these posts with.

My glucose testing was last Friday and I passed.  Yahoo!  I was totally scared of failing since I've had a major sweet tooth the past 27 weeks, haha.  I also got weighed and saw that I am at 123 pounds, only 1 pound gained in the past 4 weeks.

pregnancy symptoms:
  • The same leg cramps, backaches, constipation and hemorrhoids of previous weeks. (yes except no hemorrhoids ... those sound terrible.)
  • Skin, hair and nail changes -- they might be thicker, grow faster or be more brittle. (yes?  I think my hair is super shiny and thicker than normal)
  • Snissing (that's peeing when you sneeze). Baby is putting a ton of pressure on your bladder. Make frequent pit stops. (no comment)

    Oh and baby went on his 2nd flight of this pregnancy ... Ryan and I went to Puerto Rico for our babymoon!  4 glorious days of sunshine and zero responsibility.  It was bliss.

    Next doctor's appointment isn't until 12/19 so weight and medical updates will be given during week 29's post. 

    Babymoon - part 4

    Ugh.  It's cold in Charlotte, NC.  How I miss those 80 degree days back in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

    The last part of our babymoon was spent in the city of Fajardo where we jumped on a small boat along with a few other tourists to tour a bioluminescent bay.

    We used the company, Bioisland, to set up the actual tour, that lasted about 1.5 hours.  The "Laguna Grande" is full of plankton that light up in the water when moved.  Our boat's captain was pretty knowledgeable about my camera and was able to set up some killer shots.

    I can't explain how amazing the experience was ... there is just something about being out in the middle of nature, in complete darkness, underneath some beautiful stars.  One of our guides was able to point out more constellations than I have ever seen, even in books.  Not to mention I saw a shooting star ... that was just an OMG moment for sure.

    We got back to the hotel after 11pm and we were exhausted!  The next morning brought a slight flight delay but we made it home to Mason around 6:45pm and I couldn't have been more excited to see him.  We shared this weird laughing/crying moment and I knew he was as happy to see me as I was to see him.

    Thank you to my wonderful husband for taking me on such an amazing trip.  I was so relaxed and content to spend a few days alone with him without a constant toddler interruption :)

    Babymoon - part 3

    Yesterday afternoon Ryan and I spent 50 blissful minutes getting a couples massage. Since mine was prenatal, I had to spend the duration on my side. There was also no pressure added to any of the motions; the massage was strictly for relaxation. And it was glorious!

    I left the spa feeling refreshed and spent some time at the pool. An hour went by and I realized it was time to figure out a dinner game plan.

    We had spent the previous night in Old San Juan for dinner, so we decided out of convenience to dine at one of the nice restaurants at the Ritz.

    il Mulino is "an authentic Italian restaurant." Ryan and I split an appetizer of langoustines, each had a salad, and I had the mushroom ravioli while he had a veal dish. For dessert we split their tiramisu. I didn't take any pictures while in the restaurant ... Just seemed a little rude since it was such a nice place.

    Ryan did capture this shot after our meal while we were wandering the hotel lobby.

    This morning we ran 2 miles and walked 1.5 miles to the grocery store and to grab breakfast. The rest of the day has been spent at the beach, pool, and now hotel room totally relaxing. It's been fantastic to really sit back and not worry about anything.

    Tonight we will be taking a boat tour in a bioluminescent bay and tomorrow we leave for the states. Hope to have another recap on the rest of our trip up sometime tomorrow night!

    Babymoon - part 2

    Whew. It's nice to be sitting, I mean, laying down after all of the walking we've done today.

    After sleeping in Ryan and I finally got out of the hotel for our run.

    We covered 3.7 miles in under 40 minutes. Not a bad view while running.

    After showering and getting ready we cabbed it to Old San Juan to start our sight seeing. We had breakfast at Cafeteria Mallorca, a really cool old school dive.

    We both had the Mallorca sandwich ... Ham, egg, cheese, on a bun dusted with powdered sugar and some cafe con leche to wash it all down.

    It. Was. Amazing. I was smiling after every bite.

    We walked to El Morro, the fortress at one end of Old San Juan then took our time walking back to find some shopping and more eating.

    The rest of the day will be spent at the spa and pool. More updates to come!

    Babymoon - part 1

    After a very early 6am flight out of Charlotte, and a connection in Atlanta, we landed in San Juan Puerto Rico around 12:30 yesterday. (They are an hour ahead)

    We grabbed some lunch and hit up their local grocery store for some waters and a banana.

    After realizing our room was still not ready I changed into my bathing suit in the lobby's restroom and headed to the pool for some sunshine.

    We decided to have an early-ish dinner in Old San Juan since we were so tired from our travels. We stumbled upon a tapas restaurant, Toro Salao and split some items. The patatas bravas and jamón croquettas were our favorites.

    We made it back to the hotel around 9pm and were asleep by 10. Now it's time to get ready for our morning run! Updates later. Hope everyone's weekend is going well!

    Pregnancy #2 - week 26

    Holy exhaustion!  Being pregnant is hard ... and very tiring it seems.  All of a sudden my energy levels have dropped this week; something I'm not thrilled about.  I basically just pleaded with Mason to please take a nap because mommy needed one too.  I'm pretty sure jogging/walking 4 miles this morning doesn't help.  I'm not willing to give up exercising but at what point am I causing more harm than good?  As long as I get a couple of hours of rest in the afternoon I should be ok.  We'll see how the next 14 weeks go.

    • Trouble sleeping. The closer you get to your due date, the tougher it might be to get some rest! - I have definitely noticed this in the past couple of days ... waking up around 3am and not being able to fall back asleep for hours. 
    • Swelling. This also might not let up for a while. - I haven't really noticed
    • Headaches, due to hormone fluctuations or stress. - yes!  I hate headaches in general but these seem more annoying
    • Pregnancy brain -- is it getting tricky to remember stuff? - I blame everything on pregnancy brain
    • Braxton Hicks contractions. These are different from labor contractions because they're irregular and milder. - I've had these for a couple of weeks.  seem more common lately.
    • Slightly higher blood pressure. That's normal at this phase of pregnancy. - not sure about this one
    I'll be going to the doctor on Friday for a check-up and for my glucose testing.  Should have a better update on week 27's post.

    November running in review

    Let's hear it for a month without any major injuries or sicknesses!  The only thing that prevented me from running in November was a weekend in FL (I packed running clothes but the weather was absolutely horrible), and having in-laws in town to entertain for Thanksgiving.

    I'm glad that I managed to run at least 50 miles in November, on top of starting Pure Barre.  Not sure how many miles I'll get done in December but hopefully it'll be enough to hit 900 miles for the year.  That would require almost 60 miles of running so we'll see how that goes ...
