From the YMCA Charlotte website:
"Y Readers is a nationally recognized literacy
program that serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade
level. The program operates as a six-week summer camp as well as an
afterschool program. The purpose of Y Readers is to provide the
additional support that students need to be proficient in reading by the
end of third grade. This is accomplished through a focus on improving
students' literacy skills and self-confidence in the classroom."
I sat with three different 6 year old students, for 20 minutes each. We took turns reading ... with one student I read the entire book first, then she read the book to me. With another student she read the book first and looked to me for help with pronunciation.
My first week went well and I am looking forward to volunteering again later this morning. With Mason being in preschool or child watch at the YMCA during these mornings, I felt inclined to give back to my community. My total commitment to the Y Readers program has been a training session held at the YMCA and a total of 6 1-hour sessions at the elementary school.
Hi Jess! Thanks for volunteering with Y Readers AND for helping spread the word about the value of volunteering to both students and their adult reading buddies!
