my first juice cleanse

should I re-title this post and say, "my first and ONLY juice cleanse?"  possibly.  but ask me again after some time has gone by and maybe I'll change my mind.

On Friday Ryan and I started the Sambazon 3 Day Purifying Cleanse.   I bought two, 3 bottle sets from Costco, and the long list of shopping items for the vegan meals.  Why did we want to do a cleanse?  from the website:
The Sambazon 3-Day Purifying Cleanse consists of three organic superfood beverages and a sensible meal plan designed by Dr. Oz health expert Ashley Koff, RD. The program helps prepare your body for renewal, eliminate toxins and recharges your energy levels.

We were hoping the cleanse would help jump-start our fitness and health levels for the new year.  We had eaten poorly during our holiday vacations and wanted a way to get back on track.

Each day we started with the PREPARE juice, a blend of Acerola Cherry, Lemon & Cayenne.  Then we had a snack followed by the ELIMINATE juice, a purifying blend of Kale, Cucumber & Parsley with a hint of Yacon from Peru.  Then lunch followed by the final juice of the day, RECHARGE, a blend of wild harvested Brazil nuts, Cashews & a hint of cocoa.

Day 1 -
Daily Cleanse juice
10-15 almonds
Quinoa Bowl
Purifying Greens juice
Roasted Beet and Blood Orange salad with caraway seeds
Protein Recharge juice
1 cup cut-up veggies (broccoli and carrots)
Open-faced veggie burger with avocado and organic side salad

Day 2 -
Daily Cleanse juice
Organic fruit bowl
Purifying Greens juice
massaged kale salad
Protein recharge juice
1 cup cut-up veggies (broccoli and carrots)
saag-sational curry

Day 3 -
Daily Cleanse juice
fresh cut apple with almond butter
Sambazon overnight oats
Purifying Greens juice
organic steamed vegetable plate with tofu
Protein recharge juice
1 cup cut-up veggies (broccoli and carrots)
lentils with mushrooms, roasted garlic and butternut squash

We stuck to the meal plans almost 100%.  I made a few modifications when I couldn't find certain ingredients at the store.  ie: the sambazon overnight oats were supposed to have Sambazon protein chocolate almond coconut milk and I used vanilla unsweetened almond milk instead.

On the 2nd day I was at a brunch for Junior League and had a mini carrot muffin without the frosting.  I felt really bad that I cheated and didn't have the cut-up veggies that afternoon as a snack.  And of course I brought one home to Ryan in hopes of mending my error but he said no and stuck to the cleanse.  He has way more willpower than me.

My thoughts -
  • I was hungry every day
  • I did not like missing out on coffee each morning
  • I did not feel like I had enough energy to do 15-20 minutes of light exercise each day while on this cleanse but did manage to work out 2 out of the 3 days
  • the quinoa fruit bowl was tasty
  • the best dinner was the lentils with mushrooms, roasted garlic and butternut squash
  • all of the lunches were meh
  • the best juice was the Recharge which tasted like a milkshake
  • each night we drank a cup of chamomile tea
  • I had a headache the day before the cleanse started from no coffee, Day 1, and Day 2.  By Day 3 my headache had finally subsided
  • I've never peed so much in my life ... I had at least 60 ounces of water a day, if not more
  • Ryan and I both lost 3 pounds
I don't think I could ever be vegan or give up caffeine and alcohol.  I had given up eating meat 3 days before this cleanse started so that doesn't really bother me.  I think I'll start having water with lemon juice every morning as a mini detox from now on.  And I think I'll stick to my philosophy of everything in moderation is ok in life, especially when it comes to drinking and eating.
