on a roll ...

2nd morning in the gym and I'm starting to feel good about this whole working out business.

Today's workout included doing 3 different back exercises:

  • lat pull downs
  • low cable rows
  • side bends with 10 pound weight
After I was done in the weight room I went upstairs and did some cardiovascular exercise:
  • 15:15 minutes on the elliptical doing interval training (hard stuff!) for 1.25 miles
  • 10:15 minutes on the seated bicycle for 2 miles
For breakfast I had 1 egg sunny-side up, a couple of slices of tomato, 1/2 cup of fat free cottage cheese, and a mini whole wheat bagel with blackberry preserves.

Tomorrow I think I'll start running again ... we'll see how that goes.

thanksgiving recap

Not only was 2010 the first year that Ryan and I celebrated Thanksgiving as the "Chalmers", but it was also our first thanksgiving in Charlotte.  With the high cost of travel to Florida for the Christmas holiday we knew that we wouldn't be able to travel to see our family for Thanksgiving.  We were fortunate that our friends were in the same boat and were available to spend the holiday with us.

Brandon bought a ham, broccoli casserole, and pecan pie from Honeybaked Ham.  Pablo slaved away in his kitchen and made 2 pans of macaroni and cheese (one with bacon and the other with jalapenos and red peppers) and a gigantic vat of bacon mashed potatoes.

I was in charge of the turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.  Ryan helped me do prep work the night before and we got a lot of chopping and peeling out of the way.  Thursday morning we woke up and prepped the turkey and finished up the rest of the dishes.  By the afternoon the boys had arrived and the wine drinking had begun.  I made some deviled eggs and cut up some white cheddar cheese to snack on with some crackers.

We were ready to eat around 5:30pm and enjoyed all of the food we had prepared.  We sat around the table in silence, rapidly shoveling food into our mouths.  It was definitely not our classiest moment.

and we're back!

After over a week of not working out I finally made it back to the gym this morning.  It was glorious!  Ok maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the work out was definitely needed.  I played it safe and did 30 minutes on the elliptical (2.5 miles) followed by 15 minutes on the seated bicycle (2.5 miles).  The time seemed to fly by since I was watching HGTV and not paying attention to how long I was really exercising for.  I figured doing some cardiovascular exercise was a good way to ease back into a work out regime after having both a stomach virus and cold the past 2.5 weeks.

Once Ryan and I got home from the gym I made us some green monsters using fresh spinach, frozen bananas, peanut butter, water, and protein mix.  Since it was such a chilly morning I figured eating some hot, steamy oatmeal was a good choice for breakfast.  I made our quick cooking oats on the stove top and mixed in some brown sugar and maple syrup.  Delicious, toasty, and heart healthy!  Ryan and I pinkie promised last night that today was going to be a start of us eating healthy and exercising more.  It's really encouraging to have such a dedicated work out partner.  I'm a very lucky girl :)

I can't explain it, but I've been so incredibly unmotivated lately with writing (blogging).  I'm not sure if it has to do with the lack of excitement currently going on in my life or the fact that I was sick for almost a week with stomach flu like symptoms and couldn't even get out of bed, let alone blog.

Sigh.  As a segway to an almost real blog post I'll just post this picture of leaves.

Fall in Charlotte is unlike anything I have ever experienced before.  Being a true Floridian, the closest thing to fall was always temperatures in the low 80's with slightly less humidity than normal.  Palm trees lined the streets and those leaves never fell, unless there was a hurricane going on.

The air is crisp and the leaves have been slowly falling to the ground.  The leaves cover my car as it sits in the parking lot since I refuse to drive anywhere when I can walk instead.  The sun shines and the temperature hovers around the low 60's.  I've heard from fellow Charlotterians that Thanksgiving brings the winter season in and at that point there is no turning back til spring time.  Brr ...

Dowd YMCA 5k

On Saturday Ryan and I ran our first 5k in Charlotte.  We woke up to temperatures in the low 30's and were not overly thrilled about our running conditions.  We walked a couple of blocks from our apartment to the light rail station and then took the rail over to the YMCA.  After picking up our timing chips we waited around inside the YMCA for the race to start.  The race began at 8 am and we began weaving in and out of the mass of kids that were running the race.

I finished the race with a chip time of 25:31 minutes.  I was happy with my time considering how cold and miserable I was the entire race.

3 days in a row ...

You could find me at the Dowd YMCA on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Just trying to get my money's worth out of my new gym membership :)

On Tuesday I ran on the treadmill for 3.11 miles and finished in 28:25 minutes.  I was so overwhelmed by the size of the gym and the amount of people that work out there ... especially after 5:00p.  After finishing my run I decided to head home and save my exploring of my new gym for another day.

On Wednesday I increased my mileage and ran 3.27 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill.  After the run I headed downstairs to the free weights area and did back and biceps.  It felt good to lift weights again, even though I was surrounded by huge dudes who were slinging around weights like it was their job.

On Thursday I decided to skip the running and do a different sort of cardiovascular exercise ... cardio dance.  The 45 minute class was non-stop dancing to various fast paced songs.  I definitely broke a sweat while dancing around the basketball court.

Freedom Park

Yesterday evening Ryan and I ran through an awesome local park, located only a few miles from where we live, called Freedom Park. We were finally able to run on trails, alongside a quietly bubbling creek, while faintly listening to cars on the streets nearby.  After 28:30 minutes we were finished with our 3.11 mile run.

I'm looking forward to running the next couple of days and taking Friday off in preparation for our race on Saturday morning.

Care Bear Stare!

Once we got our run out of the way on saturday it was time for more fun things.  We headed over to Mortimer's Pub to watch the UCF vs. East Carolina game.  After eating many wings and drinking lots of beer, UCF ended up beating those smelly purple pirates.
With another UCF victory under our belts it was time to head home and change into our Halloween costumes.

10.2 mile week

Wednesday I skipped running and went to a body sculpt 45 minute class at the Y instead.

Class DescriptionA head to toe workout using calisthenic moves and strengthening exercises with weights and tubes.

The class was full of lunges, squats, and all of the other leg work outs that I usually hate doing.

On Thursday Ryan and I did a 2.25 mile run from our house to the Bank of America Panthers stadium and then back in 19:30 minutes.

Friday we took the day off from running (I thought I was starting to come down with a cold) and instead spent my evening working on our Halloween costumes.

Saturday morning was chilly in Charlotte.  We waited until around 9:30 to do our morning run and were still pretty cold throughout the 2.25 miles.  My Garmin wasn't working so I couldn't see our exact time and had to look up our course on MapMyRun.  Those last couple of miles made my weekly mileage total be 10.2 miles. Not too bad considering we are still getting back into the whole running thing after taking a few weeks off cause of the move.
