better than nothing

Thursday's work out was a slight step up from just sitting on the couch.  I finally felt well enough to work out so I made myself head down to the gym to do some work on the treadmill.  I managed to do the following:
  • run 2.5 miles in 28:00 mins (approx 275 calories  ... I forgot the exact number)
This was accomplished after walking at 4.0 for 5 minutes and then jogging for the next 23 minutes, ranging between 5.0-6.0.

I'm looking forward to the month of June when I get back into the groove of working out.  This weekend is basically a waste since we're heading out of town to Jacksonville to visit Alex, Brandon, and Pablo.

pick a composer

There are days when I feel like listening to classical music.  They aren't as rare as one would think.  Although I have self-diagnosed myself with adult ADD and usually go a mile a minute, I do enjoy how calm and soothing classical music can be.

This morning I searched on Grooveshark for some Beethoven.  It's a toss up between him and Mozart for my favorite composer status.  I chose Beethoven because his music has been on my mind since last night when I read an article in Runner's World about a guy who would listen to Beethoven at times while running.

Currently the song playing is "Symphony no. 5 in C minor" and it has made the past 7 minutes very enjoyable.  "Symphony no. 7 in A minor" has just begun and I find myself drifting off to a place far away from this sterile and dismal cubicle.

long hiatus

I finally feel well enough to look and act like a human being.  The past couple of days I wasn't feeling so hot.  Correction ... I was feeling TOO hot and had a fever Monday night.  Yesterday followed with some sniffles and achy everything.  After some down time last night I finally woke up today feeling almost 100%.  Almost.  I was even considering walking around the lake tonight for a couple of miles to have some sort of exercise this week.  We'll see.

No exercise usually means no blogging but I'll recap this past weekend:

Saturday we drove to Sarasota for a friend's wedding.  We had lunch at the Old Salty Dog on Siesta Key.  Ryan and I both ordered a beer battered, deep fried, 1/4 pound hot dog.  It was pretty darn good.  Then we headed back to our hotel for the weekend, the Ritz, and met up with some friends at the pool.  After splitting a 6 pack with Ryan and getting a good amount of sun we headed up to our room to shower and get ready for the wedding.

The wedding ceremony was held at a local catholic church and the reception was at Michael's on East.  Both were lovely.  We ate, we drank, we danced.

Sunday morning we packed up our things and headed to breakfast at Buddha Belly Donuts.  We split a Boston creme donut and some eggs, bacon, toast, and potatoes and washed it all down with the largest iced coffees ever.

The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent on the couch waiting for the series finale of LOST.

friday's work out

After getting off work today at 11:30am I had time to get a quick toenail polish change and then met up with my lovely husband for some Tijuana Flat's lunch. Afterwards me and our friend Tonio made it up to the pool for some quality fun in the sun.  I knew after eating 740 calories today during breakfast that I would need to run some of that off.  I cut my time with Tonio short and headed upstairs to change for a run.  I managed to do the following:
  • 3.25 miles on the treadmill in 30:00 minutes (397 calories)
Then I showered up and got ready for the mall with my friend Danielle.  Good times shopping!

mmmm .... breakfast

Every week co-workers and I take turns bringing in breakfast on Friday.  Most of the time we bring in bagels from Einstein's but once in a while we get a special treat  ... chicken biscuits from Chik-fil-a!  And since we are down to so little people in our breakfast group we get spoiled on some days.  Not only did we get a delicious chicken biscuit that I smothered with Texas Pete hot sauce and honey, but also an order of freshly fried hash browns.  Not a bad way to start off the day!

thursday's work out

After getting home from work yesterday and then taking Honey on her afternoon walk, it was time for some runnin'.  I opted to stay indoors on the treadmill rather than heading outdoors for two reasons 1) Ryan was out of town and I don't like running outside without a running partner 2) it was freakin' hot.

  • 3.35 miles in 33:30 minutes (395 calories burned according to the treadmill)
  • 1 minute warm-up and 3 minute cool down is included in that time so I'm not THAT slow, although I have definitely slowed down quite a bit

Once I was done running I had to rush to shower and eat dinner cause I was meeting up with Chris and Bree to head over to the Regal Cinema in Waterford Lakes.  We had gotten tickets to see Times Talks Live featuring the creators of LOST.  Yes you can say it ... we're all big nerds.  Fortunately for us we weren't the only LOST fanatics in the theater.

happy thursday

(will run for coffee)

Elevators can be an awkward spot if there are strangers in there who want to talk.  This morning an older man was in the elevator at work with me and commented on the fact that I had two cups in my hands (one was empty from the strawberry smoothie I had drank and the second was my undrank coffee).

"At least we'll have something to drink if this thing breaks."

Really?  Why joke about elevators breaking down especially when that elevator in particularly has broken enough times to put fear in most of the employees in this building.

"Uh ha.  Too bad one is already empty."

It's hard for me to speak to people at 7:30am without sounding too incredibly sarcastic and/or bitchy.  Even when I reached my floor and I assumed there would be no room for further conversation he still managed to say "Enjoy all of your beverages."  Will do buddy, will do.

that kind of day ...

I definitely did not get enough sleep last night.  Getting home past midnight and then not falling asleep until close to 1am is way later than my usual bed time.  Waking up this morning at 6:20am (my usual time) did not go well.  I stayed in bed until 7:10.  Somehow I still made it in to work by 8:00 with a packed breakfast and lunch.

Now that it's the afternoon and my 12 oz of morning coffee has worn off I am definitely getting drowsy.  After realizing I had nothing to do during my lunch break I took it as an opportunity to walk to Cozee Cafe, a neighboring coffee shop.
It is definitely hot outside and wearing a black shirt did not help keep me cool.  The walk itself takes a little less than 10 minutes each way and having some Coldplay playing on my iPhone helped make the walk more doable.  Once I got to the cafe I ordered a large iced latte but was torn on the flavor choice.  This place seriously has over 20 different flavors to choose from.  They have normal ones like vanilla and mocha but then they also have some fun flavors like bananas foster, tiramisu, and my new favorite chocolate chip cookie dough.  They also give you the choice of 2%, skim, or soy milk.  I went with skim and am thoroughly enjoying my afternoon delight.  Once in a while its OK for me to deviate from my no caffeine after 10am rule.

partially successful tuesday night

After running last night Ryan and I headed over to our favorite restaurant Cityfish for free oysters.  Every couple of weeks they offer free raw or grilled oysters from 6-7pm.  It's too good of a deal to pass up.  Especially with how much I looooooooooove oysters.  Chris had never had any before so it was fun watching him try different ways of eating them until he found his favorite - raw, on a cracker, with some lemon squeezed on top.  (below is a picture of what apalachicola oysters look like)

The restaurant was offering $2 bud light drafts so it was a good place to drink before the Magic game.  Our friends Nathan and Heather met us at the restaurant and headed back to the VUE to drink at our place before the walk to the game.

The Magic game is what makes last night less than stellar.  We lost our second game in this series and now have to face the Celtics at home for the next 2 games.  Hopefully Stan Van Gundy can talk some sense into this team and get us back to where we need to be.

entirely too hot for running ...

I can't believe its only May.  The temperature outside was a steamy 88 degrees during our run today.  Ryan and I both rushed home from work to get a run in before we met up with Chris and Bree at Cityfish for some pre-gaming oysters and beer.  Then it's off to the Magic game to watch them beat the Celtics in game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Two outer laps in around 20 minutes (didn't take the Garmin out today).  Not too bad considering how incredibly hot it was.  Only one brief, less than 1 minute pause for Ryan's good deed of the day; a woman needed help getting into her wheelchair.

Now to chug the rest of this cold water and hit the shower!

rainy conditions ...

Not only was it a Monday but it had been raining all day as well.  It was not a good combination for motivating me to do anything productive, let alone work out.  Somehow I managed to head down to the gym for some interval training.  The wet conditions outside made the treadmill that much more alluring.

There was a "300 calorie blast" training program in April's issue of Shape magazine.  I've used a variation of this training before.
  • 0-5 minutes      warm up                                   at 4 RPE
  • 5-8 minutes      increase intensity to moderate   at 5 RPE
  • 8-10 minutes    increase intensity to hard           at 7 RPE
  • 10-20 minutes  repeat minutes 5-10 twice          at 5-7 RPE
  • 20-23 minutes  decrease intensity to moderate   at 5 RPE
  • 23-24 minutes  increase intensity to hard            at 7 RPE
  • 24-25 minutes  increase intensity to very hard    at 7.3 RPE (the guide said 9 but there was no way that was happening)
  • 25-30 minutes  repeat minutes 20-25                 at 5-7.3 RPE (supposed to be 5-9)
  • 30-35 minutes  cool down                                  at 4 (guide said anywhere between 3 and 4)
I finished the 35 minute interval training with 350 calories burned and 3.15 miles ran.  Not a bad way to spend a Monday evening.  Then I did 125 crunches before starting dinner.  Tonight Ryan and I had three cheese tortellini with tomato sauce and a salad with baby spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, and Gorgonzola cheese.  Delicious meal!

and a very special thanks ...

to my awesome friend Sunny for making the drawing for my blog.  The original "running girl" drawing was given to me on my birthday (such a great gift) and has been tweaked numerous times since then (all today) to make it the perfect picture you see today.  She is so talented and I'm so lucky to have her in my life!

hot temperatures = shorts weather

One of my favorite parts of summertime is the ability to wear shorts to all types of events which may not be appropriate to wear during other times of the year.

The attire for going out on a Friday or Saturday night to a bar or restaurant can now include shorts when paired with cute sandals and a fun top.  I usually take advantage of these situations and prepare in the weeks leading up to the intense heat by stocking up on a couple new pairs of "nice" shorts.  Trust me, it's not like I'm walking around wearing jean shorts (jorts) everywhere.  I usually stick to solid colors (white, black, navy blue) and make sure they are dressier than every day casual shorts.

Since I had nothing else to do today during lunch I ventured over to H&M (conveniently located 5 minutes away at the Seminole Town Center).  I grabbed an armful of clothes to try on and even managed to pick out a pair of shorts and a new t-shirt for Ryan.  While in the dressing room I anxiously tried on a cute pair of navy blue shorts that I had anticipated wearing tonight to meet up Meghan.  Alas I am no longer a size 2.  Although the shorts were a tad too tight the real problem surfaced when I turned around to check out my butt in the mirror.  GASP!  My legs were no longer the lean, muscular, toned legs from pre-wedding exercising.  They were now flabby and even had signs of what people describe as "cottage cheese thighs".

In a panic I tore off those terrible shorts and vowed to myself that I would begin an intense work out regimen today after work.  First step was taking the four flights of stairs back to my office.  This is going to be a long summer.

let's play a game ...

Let's see if you can guess correctly the answers to these questions:

1) did Jess and Ryan work out when they got home from work yesterday?
a. of course they did, they're die hard work out fanatics
b. they briefly considered the thought of at least running around the lake and skipping weight training
c. hell no. as soon as they got home they both laid on the couch for hours

2) what did the Chalmers eat for dinner?
a. they decided to clean out their cabinets and made canned tuna and brown rice
b. Jess made ground turkey with olives and raisins all on top of brown rice (tastes better than it sounds)
c. McDonald's! Jess had been craving it all day

I'm sure you guys have caught on that we did NOT work out yesterday and ate McDonald's for dinner. Both were very bad decisions on our part. I wish the disgrace would stop there but it doesn't ... I ate 2 double cheeseburgers, along with 3 mcnuggets, and 1/2 of the large french fries order. Why do I think I should eat like a 14 year old boy (or in last night's case my 29 year old husband)?

random afternoon craving

Do you ever find yourself sitting in your cubicle on a Thursday afternoon craving a McDonald's double cheeseburger? I can honestly say that for the past hour or so I've just sat here thinking how badly I want to eat one, or two, of those delicious sandwiches from the golden arches. I am craving one so badly that I even googled this picture:

Look at that thing ... two beef patties, two slices of yellow American cheese, some pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard.

I think I have a problem.

will run for sushi?

I've noticed the more I want a delicious meal the more motivation I end up having to run. Yesterday was no different. I had plans with Katie to go to Shari Sushi at 6pm for a catch up session (we hadn't seen each other since the wedding) and of course for some happy hour deals on sushi. I decided to avoid the sweltering heat outdoors and just run indoors on the treadmill. I plowed through 2.5 miles in 25 minutes, with a 2 minute brisk walk as the warm up, 1 walking break for 1 minute after mile 1, and a 30 second cool down.

Katie and I had a good time at dinner. The conversation was good and the sushi was delicious. The red wine offered on their happy hour menu wasn't bad either.

3 days in a row of running ... is it safe to say I'm back in the running mode?

2 days of running = calzones and wings

Monday was a successful work out day for Mr. Chalmers and I. We ran 2 outer laps around Lake Eola and it was one of the hardest runs I've had in a long time. It was so hot outside and I couldn't get a rhythm going with my breathing. When the 2 laps were over the last thing we wanted to do was weight train but we managed to head to the 7th floor. I pushed through my lack of energy and did 3 different bicep exercises. I even managed to increase my weight from 5lbs to 10lbs on the last exercise. I finished off the evening of working out with 125 crunches.

Last night I was able to drag Ryan outside for a run/walk around the lake. We did 2 outer laps again with only minimal walking. I kept telling him it was better than not doing anything at all. At least we can start to have some consistency with a) being outside and b) being active for 20+ minutes.

We skipped doing a weight work out in favor of getting delicious food from Broadway Pizza. Although we didn't go to the location by UCF, the restaurant we did go to was owned by the same people and provided the same menu. We settled on my usual meal from there from back in the days of college - pepperoni calzone and hot chicken wings. It was all washed down with a delicious cherry coke. At least working out for 2 days in a row made me feel a little less guilty about eating such unhealthy and fattening food.

introducing ... Mrs. Chalmers!

It's been over 2 weeks since my last blog and I'm not really sure where to begin. Should I talk about my wedding on April 24th, the honeymoon to Costa Rica, or how little I've been working out since we've been back?

I decided I'll post individual entries for the wedding and the honeymoon since it'll give me a chance to recap all of my memories from those events.

In the meantime I'll stick to the lack of working out. I really hope the husband and I get out of our rut soon. We haven't had any motivation to work out and it's really starting to show. Not to mention we each gained 5 pounds while vacationing.

I managed to run 3 times last week totalling maybe 6.5 miles. Hopefully I'll be able to make myself run today after work. More importantly I hope I find time to blog about the wedding and honeymoon. Although the Magic play game 4 against the Hawks tonight so I can't make any promises about having free time :)
