It was Friday night, February 19th, and I had just gotten home from work. The last thought on my mind was making dinner. Usually Friday nights are filled with happy hours or dinner with friends and then subsequent bar hopping. Unfortunately Ryan and I had a 5k to run the following morning and I was begrudgingly going to make the normal pasta for our pre-race dinner.
I plucked my butt off the couch and headed to the kitchen to start dinner. I think Ryan could tell I had no desire to do anything so he said those five words every girl loves to hear, "Want to go to Johnny's?" Johnny's Fillin' Station is this awesome burger place a few miles from downtown that we like to hit up whenever we get a chance. It took me less than 30 seconds to consider his question before I said "Hell yeah let's go." Next step was to text our friend Chris, who was also running the 5k the next morning, to see if he was up for our new pre-race meal. Within minutes he was outside his apartment waiting for us to pick him up.
I ordered my normal burger from Johnny's ... the Mini. At 1/4 pound with cheddar cheese its the perfect Jess-sized cheeseburger. Add a side of onion rings and a Coca Cola classic and I was one happy camper. The boys opted for larger more ornate burgers, which they washed down with Yuenglings. I wasn't jumping on board the "drinking before a race" bandwagon which Chris seems to have a lot of practice at.
We woke up Saturday morning bright and early for the 5k. Chris picked us up (we like to carpool to races when we can) and headed to Winter Park. I've ran the Run Around the Pines 5k in the past and was familiar with the course, which was mostly flat and fast. I had gotten a PR at this race last year, 25:31, and was looking to run even faster this year.
The morning was colder than I would've liked, but at least the sun was out and the crowd of runners seemed to be in good spirits. I felt great during the run but didn't think I was pushing myself as much as I should've been. Somehow I managed to finish the race in 25:21, my new 5k PR! Ryan also had a PR at this race. We are convinced that the cheeseburgers eaten the night before were what propelled us to the finish line faster.
